Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of The La Sirena

9. The Mermaid Series

The final name for the ship, La Sirena, came late in the development after designer Mark Yang had departed the series.

Like Arana Cosmica, La Sirena (Spanish for "The Mermaid") was chosen because of Captain Rios' Chilean roots. With the name finalized, mermaid iconography was filtered into the set and costume designs for Star Trek: Picard.

Seen upon his introduction in "The End is the Beginning", Captain Rios is depicted as having a mermaid tattoo on his left shoulder and, in "Broken Pieces", it's revealed the former Starfleet officer keeps a collection of ceramic mermaids in his living quarters.

A cutout mermaid symbol was also adopted for use as the La Sirena's combadge and embroidered on the seating in the ship's cockpit. Finally, late in the development process, veteran Star Trek illustrator John Eaves provided a mermaid graphic for the La Sirena's nose art, the last detail added to the ship before it made its first on screen appearance.
