Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of The USS Discovery You Need To Know
5. Engineering... Or Not
In the pre-CBS All Access era, the Star Trek franchise was often guided by tradition, with each successive television series or movie often simply a variation on a tried and true formula. This meant that among Star Trek's many iconic settings and locations, you could be reasonably assured that any installment would feature heavy use of a starship bridge, sickbay, corridor complex, and engine room.
However, despite the experimental propulsion system at the heart of Star Trek: Discovery's premise, we may not have actually seen the USS Discovery's true main engineering section yet. Throughout the first two seasons of the show, the section of the ship that we would customarily recognize as the engine room has been alternatingly referred to as an "engineering workspace", Paul Stamets' lab, and (most specifically) "engineering test bay alpha".
In the Star Trek: Short Treks installment "Ask Not", the engine room of the USS Enterprise does appear and its a fully computer-generated environment featuring an impressive and complex warp core.
So, is engineering test bay alpha the Discovery's engine room or is there an equally complex and computer-generated location just waiting to be revealed? Perhaps we'll know in the forthcoming season three, but until then... we may not have actually seen a vital part of the USS Discovery yet.
