One of the more distinguishing features of the USS Discovery is her unique bronze hull color. This is especially clear when the Discovery is seen flying alongside other ships of the fleet, such as the standard metallic gray USS Enterprise in "Such Sweet Sorrow, Parts 1 and 2".

While the producers played with numerous color variations (including simple gray) in their search for the perfect version of Discovery to put on screen, it was creator Bryan Fuller's idea to use a scheme that harkened back to the 1970s. As the producers looked at many different vehicles to inform the design of the USS Discovery, James Bond's Lotus Turbo Esprit was a key inspiration, particularly in its bronze and gold paint scheme as seen in "For Your Eyes Only".
