When Captain Janeway took command in Star Trek: Voyager's pilot episode, "Caretaker", the USS Voyager was basically a used car... at least from a behind-the-scenes perspective.

Like the Enterprise-D before her, the sets for the USS Voyager were built on the basic framework and skeleton of the sets constructed all the way back in 1977 for Star Trek: Phase II, later repurposed for Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Following the wrap of Star Trek Generations, the bridge of the Enterprise-D from Star Trek: The Next Generation was torn down and Voyager's bridge was erected. However, the rest of the standing sets were simply modified to represent the new Intrepid-class starship, with sickbay, the transporter room, quarters, and corridor network receiving dramatic facelifts, but more or less retaining their original configurations. Engineering was also built over the remains of the Enterprise's engine room, but that set was extensively reworked to include an expanded second level that utilized components of the nacelle tube control room from TNG's "Eye of the Beholder".

Even Voyager's shuttlecraft was a reused set from the Star Trek features, originally built for 1989's Star Trek V: The Final Frontier before being cut in half to serve as the Enterprise-D's type-6 shuttle. Other recognizable set pieces from earlier Treks included the windows from TNG's Ten Forward, which were flipped upside down and used for Voyager's briefing room and Captain Janeway's ready room.

This tradition of recycling sets would carry on through Star Trek: Voyager's run with the sickbay and cargo bay sets being used as interiors aboard the Enterprise-E in Star Trek: First Contact and Voyager's quarters, ready room, briefing room, and engineering sets appearing in Star Trek: Insurrection. Even after Star Trek: Voyager ended, some parts of the ship would continue to see life in the franchise and Voyager's crew quarters appeared one final time in Star Trek Nemesis as the crew quarters and officer's lounge in that final TNG film.
