Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of USS Voyager You Need To Know

8. The Holodecks Are Independent

Star Trek Voyager

As mentioned in the first season episode "Parallax", Voyager's holodecks are self sufficient, using an independent power source that's dangerously incompatible with the rest of the ship's systems.

The holodeck reactor was apparently so isolated from the rest of Voyager's systems that in the episode "Night", the ship lost both primary and auxiliary power, but the Captain Proton holoprogram continued to run. This inconvenient feature meant that while the crew struggled to keep essential ship's functions like replicators running, they could still enjoy a drink at Chez Sandrine's, a mai tai at the Paxau Resort, or make out with cows in Fair Haven (it happened).

Of course this was actually a convenient plot contrivance that allowed the creators to continue using the holodeck, a staple of The Next Generation-era storytelling, but perhaps not the most intuitive way to depict Voyager's dire circumstances.
