2. The Borg

Despite all of the dangers and threats encountered by The Federation over the centuries, few have presented more of an existential threat as The Borg.

Although its origins are unclear and subject to rife, largely V'ger related, speculation within the fandom, it's widely accepted that The Borg began their existence in the Delta Quadrant. Developing for thousands of years combining their biological selves with cybernetic implants, The Borg eventually developed a shared consciousness, 'the collective', and sought to achieve perfection through the assimilation of sentient life, adding the biological and technological distinctiveness to their own.

Destroying a Borg Drone is no mean feat, as their single minded determination precludes fear, and their extreme versatility means conventional weaponry has limited effectiveness until they adapt. Borg have been seen walking the hull of the Enterprise-E during First Contact, and some drones from that temporal incursion survive frozen in ice for ninety years before assaulting the original Enterprise, and transmitting their location to the collective, putting in motion an invasion 200 years in the making.
