Star Trek: 10 Starfleet Jobs You Won't Believe Exist

"What's this!? TrekCulture effectively objectifying women to the point where their agency in the show can be boiled down to nothing more than a niche on-board admin position???".

Well... yes, sadly. But that's because it was, for a long time in the franchise, simply how they were written.

Gene Roddenberry was insistent that the yeomen in Star Trek - effectively the captain's assistants - should be played by women. The description that they should be played by a succession of young actresses, "always lovely", was literally a rule in the Star Trek Writers/Directors guide, and Grace Lee Whitney herself described her role as "space Geisha".

While Star Trek has always prided itself on how ahead-of-the-curve it's been in regards to representation, this habit of objectification lingered long after the Original Series. Deanna Troi's initial four-boobed treatment, the casting of Jeri Ryan to "sex up" Voyager, and Enterprise attempting to battle low ratings by having T'Pol wear increasingly tight and revealing uniforms.

All that being said though, we're well aware that pointing out the issues of representation isn't nearly enough when you're a channel of exclusively-male Star Trek fans. While we're keen to hear from anybody who thinks they can improve the channel, if you're reading this and thinking "hey, I'm a woman, and I can do this content lark just as well as these squares" then we'd strongly encourage you to send us a CV and a showreel. Your voice here is sorely needed.
