Star Trek: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About The Guardian Of Forever

3. It Has Ties To The Q Continuum

The Beta Canon Novel series The Q Continuum, written by Greg Cox, depicts Q and the Guardian of Forever interacting, thousands of years in our past. This younger version of Q used the Guardian as a way of discovering 'something new'.

This is important for several reasons. First, it shows that the Guardian of Forever is older, in fact, than the Q that we've come to know. In the original episode, it states that it's older than Earth's Sun, but there's no definite number on it. Q, we know, has been around for aeons, so the idea of something older is formiddable.

In these novels, Q also intimates that the Guardian was designed and built by ancestors of the Q themselves, as he laments that the Continuum no longer designs anything new. With the Guardian's powers as they are, and the Q holding the ability to nip through time, across universes, though are apparently worried about provoking the Borg - it makes sense that there would be a crossover.

Let us hope though that the events of these novels don't come to pass, as the Galactic Barrier falls after an old foe of Q's, whom he met via the Guardian, returns to wreak havoc.
