Aside from the acting credits, actor Avery Brooks has a rich history in the realms of music.

The performance of The Best is Yet to Come in Badda-Bing Badda-Bang is Brooks himself alongside James Darren and he scored the final two episodes of his series A Man Called Hawk. Blessed with a baritone voice, Brooks has produced several albums over the years, digging into his deep love of jazz which flowed into his portrayal of Sisko right from the start of Emissary.

Brooks also directed nine episodes of the series which is the same as Rene Auberjonois, including season three's Jem'Hadar episode The Abandoned, as well as the much discussed season four Rejoined and season five's Ties of Blood and Water. His defining directorial assignment would be the Sisko powerhouse of Far Beyond the Stars seeing Brooks both centre stage on camera and behind it in one of Star Trek's most powerful episodes.

His visual style of directing and confidence were not always welcomed on set. Assistant director BC Cameron said in What We Left Behind that he felt Brooks wasn't letting him in on the full vision of the episode when filming Tribunal for the second season. That was also Brooks' first time in the directing chair while his last was the show's penultimate instalment, The Dogs of War

To date, Brooks also holds the distinction of being the third and final series lead actor to direct Star Trek either on TV or cinematically.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
