The loss of Jennifer Sisko was to have played a large part in Jake's opinion on both space travel, and his father's career. In the initial character description, he was to have held a deep bitterness - he knew that it was space travel that resulted in the death of his mother.

Jake's relationship with his mother was rarely explored in the show, as the writers preferred to focus on Ben Sisko. The introduction of the mirror universe version of Jennifer Sisko allowed them to play with this.

While Through The Looking Glass would see Benjamin and Jennifer interact, Shattered Mirror saw her take advantage of the knowledge that Jake existed. As Jake didn't exist in the Mirror Universe, Jennifer got to explore what it was like to meet a son she never had - even if, initially, it was part of a ruse to lure his father over to their side.

Though Shattered Mirror would prove to be the only appearance of Cirroc Lofton in the mirror universe, it would not be only time audiences were teased with an alternate version of Jake Sisko.
