Star Trek: 10 Things You Didn't Know About The Soongs
9. Arik Soong's Destroyed Research
Dr. Arik Soong, a gifted 22nd century genetics expert, believed that Earth's ban on genetic manipulation was a mistake. After he was imprisoned by Earth authorities for illegal experiments on embryos he stole from Cold Station 12, he continued to conduct his research behind bars.
He was restricted to using paper to calculate different DNA sequences after he nearly escaped the prison using a digital PADD that the prison gave him. All of this work was wasted though, as the guards would routinely destroy his notes in accordance with Earth's strict laws against that type of research.
According to Arik, when Captain Archer visited him in the Enterprise episode Borderland, the walls of his prison cell contained a hand-written theoretical modification of the Human T-cell that would cure a disease known as Sharat Syndrome, in addition to increasing the range of the Human visual spectrum by five percent.
Arik made a strong case for allowing some forms of alterations in Human biology, but Archer and others argued that it was not worth the risk of creating another Khan.
