As you may have noticed by now, the Soong family includes some of the greatest scientific minds in Human history, but, before transitioning into cybernetics, they focused mainly on genetic manipulation.

As far as we can tell, Arik Soong was the last in the family to study genetics. He was sent back to prison and made the switch to cybernetics after his Augment children nearly started a war with the Klingons by firing torpedoes loaded with genetically engineered pathogens at one of their colonies.

The switch was probably quite a learning curve, especially after centuries of genetic research conducted by his family as far back as Adam Soong in the 20th century, but his work likely built the foundation for what would eventually become Noonian's androids.

One major upside to working on cybernetic research was that none of Arik's work had to be destroyed by the prison anymore.
