Star Trek: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Weyoun

5. The Frakes Connection

Back in 1986, a young actor by the name of Jonathan Frakes was cast to play Commander William T Riker in some new Star Trek show that was likely to only last a season or two at a push.

But there was another.

Also running for the role was one Jeffrey Combs. While he would ultimately lose out on the starring role in TNG, Jonathan Frakes would remember him when directing the DS9 episode Meridian and cast him in the slimy role of Tiron.

Combs has the note for playing two characters in the same episode on two different occasions. Firstly under prosthetics as both Brunt and Weyoun in The Dogs of War and one episode later as an unnamed holosuite guest at Vic's and Weyoun Eight in What You Leave Behind.

Combs has also appeared in two series finales; DS9 and Enterprise's These are the Voyages. However, Marina Sirtis and his former competition for the role of Riker, Jonathan Frakes, have appeared in three (Picard's third season) leaving them as the record holders.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
