Star Trek: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Weyoun

4. Barry Lyndon Has the Style

When explaining how he created the role of Weyoun, Jeffrey Combs has referred to the Stanley Kubrick film Barry Lyndon as his inspiration.

Combs noted that during that movie there is a sequence where two characters are being exceptionally nice to each other and adhering to formal etiquette of the period but "absolutely despise each other".

Call to Arms sees Sisko and Weyoun discuss the minefield that is about to block access to the Gamma Quadrant. As the script notes, "his aggressiveness once again covered by a mask of reasonableness and sincerity" as he explains that the Dominion wants peaceful co-existence and that they are encountering issues with the Cardassians such as the starving population.

Weyoun suggests limiting convoys to medical and economic help if the mines are not deployed. However, the real overtone here for both parties, just as with the scene in Barry Lyndon, is that war is inevitable and the Dominion will be launching an attack on DS9.

Combs's ultimate vision of Weyoun was that he was everyone's friend but that there were serious ulterior motives behind everything that he does.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
