Star Trek: 10 Things You Need To Be The Ultimate Starfleet Captain

5. A Chip On Your Shoulder

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Was your wife killed during a battle with and alien species? Perhaps your were temporarily assimilated by the Borg and forced to fight against dear friends. Maybe your dad was killed by time traveling space miners setting off a chain reaction that altered time and led to you becoming captain of Starfleet's flagship vessel straight out of the Academy. OK, there is no way that last would ever happen, right? Seriously, that was a terrible example, sorry about that. Whatever it winds up being, you need something to draw on during the tough times. You need a deep, dark secret, a heart rending wound that creates that edge you'll need when all the chips are down and your back is against the wall. You need to know you won't blink when the bad guy is staring at you through the view screen and their torpedoes are barreling down on your ship. Don't have one? Consider petitioning for your telepathic ex to serve as ship's counselor. That's got to create some truly messed up situations right?
