4. Tactical Ability
This should also be somewhat obvious for a Starfleet captain. That doesn't make it any less important. They write about the legends in Academy text books. That doesn't happen if you get outmaneuvered by Pakleds. Heck, even Academy cadets have shown early aptitude in this area. By this time you've encountered the Kobayashi Maru scenario. You've just a likely heard the stories about how Captain Kirk showed up Starfleet by defeating the no-win scenario. Sure some call it cheating, but legends never really smell like roses anyway. At some point you are going to find yourself flanked by Cardassians, surrounded by Romulans or snookered by Ferengi traders. You're going to need to think your way out of these situations. You won't have a textbook to help you. Start exercising that brain and living outside the box. Bravery gets you killed. Tactics win you battles.
