At the end of the five-year mission, Spock chose to return to Vulcan to undergo training in the Kolinahr ritual. Kolinahr was the near monastic ritual for the purging of all emotion and learning the mental discipline to keep that state. The training can run anywhere from two to six years in length. Two and a half years into his training, Spock feels the presence of a vast consciousness and abandons his training.

Spock returned to Starfleet and returned to the Enterprise along with the returning Admiral Kirk where he immediately assumed the role of Science Officer once again. Within three hours of his arrival, Spock helped Scotty fix the issues with the malfunctioning warp drive. Otherwise, Spock was very cold to his former shipmates and did not interact with them any more than necessary.

Spock stole a thruster suit and broke out of an airlock. He attempted a mind meld with V’Ger but was knocked unconscious by the sheer enormity of its intellect. Spock discovered that V’Ger had learned all that could be learned in this universe and needed to evolve.

William Decker merged with V’Ger and went on to another dimension. Spock stayed with Starfleet, realizing that pure logic would not answer his questions. He began to realize that the Vulcan way was not his way and that he would have to find his own logical path.
