In the Star Trek: The Next Generation two-part episode Unification I and II, it is 2368 and Spock has stepped out of semi-retirement and back into his role as a Federation Ambassador. He undertook a secret mission to Romulus, the homeworld of the Romulan race, to meet with progressive Ambassador Pardek about the Romulan and Vulcan people, two races that share a common ancestry.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Lt. Commander Data were surgically altered to resemble Romulans and were sent by Starfleet to confront and possibly retrieve Spock. When Picard located the Ambassador, he accused him of engaging in the “cowboy diplomacy” that his own former Captain, James T. Kirk, often employed. Spock stated that it was the consequences of getting Kirk and McCoy involved in the Khitomer incident with the Klingons that caused him to go alone to Romulus. It wasn’t the logical decision but it was the right one.

After Spock’s plans for unification are stymied by the emergence of Sela, the half-human, half-Romulan daughter of a time-displaced Tasha Yar, and the realization that Pardek had lied to him, Spock determined it might take years or even centuries for the two races to come together and decides to stay to work with the planet’s underground. Before they leave Picard mind melds with the Ambassador to share the memories and feelings his father once shared with Picard.
