Star Trek: 11 Greatest Unfinished Story Ideas

10. Decker And Ilia (Star Trek: The Motion Picture) TMP is a beautifully photographed film and contains what are arguably the best special effects of the entire series. Its themes of exploring one's sense of being and what does it mean to question one's existence are some of the strongest elements ever tackled. The crew has to think their way out of this one instead of "phasers on full, fire!" At the film's climax, Decker seemingly sacrifices his life by physically joining with the machine-entity V'Ger and in the process is reunited with his long-lost love, Ilia. What exactly happens to Decker and Ilia is intentionally left vague, but one can wonder whether they really die, especially as Kirk lists them as "missing in action." Spock states their joining with V'Ger may be an ascension of sorts towards the next step in human development. These heady concepts of evolution and consciousness would have perfectly lent themselves to an intelligent exploration of the universe within ourselves; "The Human Adventure is Just Beginning." Sadly, fans were never able to take the next step on that particular journey.

I've been a huge sci-fi fan ever since going to see "Star Wars" at the tender age of 3 (and yes I actually do remember it! I love pretty much any intelligent and entertaining film and television series (some of my all time favorites are 2001, Lawrence of Arabia, Battlestar Galactica [SyFy], and The West Wing). Must thank the stars above for such things as HBOGO and Netflix (Am thoroughly enjoying Ripper Street btw). I've also been an avid comic book collector since childhood. I earned a bachelor's degree in creative writing with a second emphasis in film studies from Florida State University (Go Noles!) and definitely enjoy sitting back and watching pretty much any sports. I wish I had a joke to end with, but I don't so I'll simply say "The End."
