When a character or alien species appears in any Star Trek series, they are almost guaranteed to appear in a Star Trek novel. . The Kzinti have appeared in the Star Trek novels Star Trek Log 5 by Alan Dean Foster, the novelization of the Star Trek: The Animated Series episode Time Trap also by Alan Dean Foster, and the Pocket Book novel Ishmael by Barbara Hambly.

All of these appearances are minor and add texture to the stories rather than advancing the plot. Star Trek Log 5 is an anthology of three novelizations of Star Trek: The Animated Series episodes. It opens with a flashback to an earlier point in the Enterprise's Caitian communication officer M'Ress's career when her former ship, the U.S.S. Hood was attacked by the Kzinti.

The novelization of Time Trap mentions the Kzinti along with other hostile races such as the Klingons and Romulans when Kirk ponders the Edosians' neutrality.

In Ishmael, a starbase commander discusses her time as chief engineer onboard the U.S.S Republic when she served alongside Orions, Kzinti, and Trisk as one of six humans onboard. She then greets some passing Kzinti in their own language.
