Star Trek: 7 Reasons Families On A Starship Are A Bad Idea

3. The Green-eyed Monster Among Children

Star Trek Kids No, not The Hulk. But jealousy. We all clamour for the latest technology. You secretly hate the friend that just got that iPad or Samsung S4, especially as a teenager. Then picture the starship full of different children of different planets and cultures. Imagine, beaming up an Amish family and adopting them into the equivalent of a mobile and intergalactic, roving South Korea, which constantly generates new technologies and greedy eyes. It could destroy cultural heritage and change the way people develop. The motto for Star Trek may accentuate the positives of sharing new ideas, but again surely this is directed at the adults and in a broader inter-racial context, not the realities of living in close proximity to people very different to you. There is nowhere to hide on a starship. It was a very extreme multicultural experiment that Roddenberry in-visioned. Programmes such as Stargate and Star Trek often see episodes where an imperialist tendency prevails. It's the SGC or Starfleet way or the highway. They can ruin a civilisations way of life through imposition. Widened the context of the article there, but I hope you see why.

My written style is quite cheeky because I would rather write something that will entertain, even if it divides opinion!
