Star Trek Deep Space Nine Feature Length Episodes: Ranked

3. Improbable Cause/The Die is Cast

Elim Garak Star Trek Deep Space Nine
CBS

Garak is one of Star Trek's best and most well developed recurring characters. Deep Space Nine benefited from being a stationary show, where the guests had time to grow, as opposed to the episode of the week stories from both The Next Generation and Voyager. In this third season two parter, Garak's shop is blown up after several of his former colleagues end up dead.

It doesn't take long for Odo to discover that Garak is responsible for the explosion, igniting the blast to ignite Odo's curiosity. Together, the pair travel to see what they can find but before they get far, a Romulan Warbird decloaks directly above their Runabout and they are taken captive.

At least, Odo is. Garak is reunited with Enbran Tain, former head of the Obsidian Order. They are en route to destroy the Founders Homeworld in the Gamma Quadrant and, for a time, Garak is convinced to join them. He even goes so far as to torture Odo for information, leading only to pain for both men. But in the end, it is for naught.

The invasion is in fact a trap and the fleet of Romulan and Cardassian ships is obliterated by the Dominion. The Defiant does arrive to save both men and the episodes close with a new, strange bond between them. They are both alone. In the end, they acknowledge that they can be alone together. Another excellent character piece wrapped up in the spectacle of the invasion.
