Although Discovery is set years before Kirk and the Enterprise began their five year mission, it doesn't date as far back as you might think, with it instead following on from Star Trek: Enterprise.

Enterprise is set right as the Federation really kicks off, and followed Scott Bakula's Jonathan Archer as he explored the galaxy 100 years before Kirk, Spock, Sulu and Uhura would do the same. Like Discovery, Archer's crew donned a blue get-up vastly different to the one seen in both TOS and TNG, but the newer kit does look ahead in a number of different ways.

This time, the blue uniforms all have their own little variations to denote rank. Captain Georgiou's outfit has a silver and gold trim to illustrate her position, whereas Doug Jones' Saru is purely silver, perhaps to designate his role as the ship's Science Officer.

It might only be a small difference, but in chronicling the shift from Enterprise to TOS, it's an effort that's easy to appreciate.
