Star Trek: Discovery - 8 Reasons Why It's The Best Series Since TNG

1. A New Lead (Who Isn't A Captain)

One of the coolest things about Discovery is that, for the first time in Star Trek history, the main protagonist isn't a captain. Instead, Michael Burnham is a first officer and a mutineer at that. She isn't a part of a unit (yet), nor do they follow the typical definition of what a first officer should and shouldn't be.

They're a new hero for a new age, and while those first two episodes didn't do an amazing job of introducing Sonequa Martin-Green's character, the third episode has undoubtedly built upon the role with added gusto, providing audiences with a morally complex protagonist who, as the ostensible instigator of the Federation-Klingon War, has plenty of baggage to deal with.

Only time will tell if Burnham's able to duke it out with Spock and Ryker for the title of Star Trek's best first officer, but there's no denying that - so far at least - she's a fascinating character, and one of the most unique protagonists to have taken centre stage in Trek media in its entire fifty year history.

It might still be early days for the show, but it has all the components to make it the best piece of Trek TV we've seen since TNG left our airwaves some twenty five years ago. Context is for Kings seemed to lay out both the scope and tone of the series going forward; if it can keep to that quality going, then there's no reason why Discovery - like TNG - can rank alongside the very best Trek shows of all time.

What do you think of Discovery? Is it the Trek show we've all been waiting for? Let us know in the comments below!
