Star Trek: Discovery Episode 3.9 Review: Ups And Downs From Terra Firma Part 1

6. Georgiou And Saru's Farewell (UP)

Star Trek Discovery Saru And Georgiou
CBS

Georgiou and Saru have never been friends, simply put. Her arrival in the Prime Universe was not met with enthusiasm, understandably, and she has never been one to warm to anyone along the way. It took Michael the better part of a year to get her to even act in any kind of familiar way, so for everyone else, it was a given that they weren't worth the dirt on her shoe.

Tilly (literally) gets a facefull when she attempts to be nice to her in the beginning of the episode, though she, and everyone else, can see how frightened Georgiou is. When the next step to helping Georgiou is discovered (after a very impressive scene between Burnham and Georgiou in the training room), she waits to disembark.

There is little mincing of words as Saru and Tilly arrive to see the two women off. Saru speaks to her directly, stating that the facts suggest it may be the last time that they speak or see each other. He extends his hand and calls her Emperor. She takes his hand and calls him Captain. It is an exchange (foreshadowing a later moment) that tugs at the heart. It is followed by her turning to Tilly and calling her Number One, to be surprised with a hug.

Which she returns.

It is both an emotional and well earned scene, a true standout moment for all concerned.
