Star Trek: Dr McCoy's 10 Point Guide To Being The Best Doctor In Starfleet
10: Dealing With The Aggressive Patient
Patients often get frustrated when they are bed-ridden in hospital. Most will grumble about it and wait to get better. But there's always one that has to take it to the next level. In Space Seed, Khan Noonian Singh (the genetically engineered superhuman) wakes up in sickbay, grabs a scalpel of a wall and uses it to threaten McCoy. I'm sure that you and I would go to pieces if someone as Godly powerful as Khan grabbed us and held a knife to our throat, but rather than show fear during this potentially fatal situation, McCoy goes into badass mode and explains to Khan what would be the most efficient way to cut open his neck. We don't get to see this side of McCoy's personality much and that is why this scene is memorable. We know he is brave but to watch him stay calm and controlled in a situation that could go either way is great to watch. Khan thinks so too and comments that he likes a ''brave man'' to which McCoy demonstrates his impeccable comedy timing with ''I was simply trying to avoid an argument.'' McCoy's Lesson: The best thing to do is to try and avoid confrontation but that's not always possible. So instead of crying out for help, verbally remind the patient that knife or no knife, this is your sickbay and no one is going to go push you around. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKazCfsVKR8
