Star Trek: Dr McCoy's 10 Point Guide To Being The Best Doctor In Starfleet
9: Dealing With The Uncooperative Patient
Picture this, you are in a dangerous and life threatening situation and a patient refuses to cooperate. Do you try to talk sense into them, start to plead, leave them where they are or use the McCoy method and force them to comply. In the episode "Friday's Child", McCoy is trying to examine Eleen, a heavily pregnant woman who is about to give birth but she refuses to let McCoy touch her. And to make the situation even worse, they are on the run from a group of aggressive aliens, The Capellan. Eleen slaps McCoy twice hard in the face when he tries to check if the baby is ok. Most of us would take a step back at this point and reconsider our plan but not McCoy who slaps her back and continues with the examination. Lucky for McCoy, he wasn't arrested for assault because Eleen came from a warrior species that respected his upfront approach, and she allowed him to examine her. McCoy's Lesson: I'm not suggesting that it is ok for a man to strike a woman, far from it but if your life is in danger, don't let small details like patient consent stand in the way of getting the job done. It also appears, young, old or pregnant, no one is beyond receiving a good old fashioned, McCoy country slap. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y21ByppIoJw
