Star Trek: Every Helmsman Ranked From Worst To Best

1. Hikaru Sulu

Oh My... who else could rule the top slot but the original and best? The fencing former botanist flew the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 for almost all of the original five-year mission under the command of Captain James T. Kirk and then when the ship was recommissioned. Eventually promoted to Captain himself, Sulu was given command of the brand new USS Excelsior NCC-2000. Referred to as 'The Great Experiment', it was the first ship of the brand new Excelsior class (and a young Ensign Tuvok would regularly serve morning tea on the bridge).

Together with his best friend Pavel Chekov, Sulu manned the front consoles of the Enterprise, trying to outmanoeuvre Klingons, Romulans, Gorn and wrath of Khan Noonien Singh when he commandeered the USS Reliant. Sulu's sense of loyalty to his fellow crew would be demonstrated time and again, when he refused the orders of the woman possessing Captain Kirk's body, to when he sent the Excelsior into Klingon territory to attempt a rescue of Kirk and McCoy from the penal colony of Rura Penthe.

Sulu's loyal service on the original Enterprise is what inspired every helmsman in Starfleet who took to the helm ever afterwards, guiding their ship and their crew deep into the stars, beyond the final frontier, where no-one has gone before.

Still bitter that Star Trek Enterprise got canned and almost old enough to angrily tell the kids to 'Get Off My Lawn!'
