Star Trek: Every Helmsman Ranked From Worst To Best
5. Pavel Chekov
While the heavily accented Russian is best known as the navigator of the original USS Enterprise and it's immediate successor, Chekov served at a variety of stations. He stood in for Spock as acting science officer at times and also as communications. Even though his station was normally sitting beside the helm (manned by his good friend Hikaru Sulu), he did fill in that position as well, guiding the Enterprise through danger and hardship.
Chekov had a storied career aboard the Enterprise, joining Captain Kirk on numerous away missions and was reunited for his long-lost love Irina Galliulin while she was searching for the planet of Eden. He fought in the gladiatorial pit of Triskelion and later spent some illuminating time as a dehydrated porous cuboctahedron solid when the extra-galactic Kelvans took over the ship briefly.
Eventually, his dutiful service led to his promotion to Chief of Security of the Enterprise under the command of Captain Decker, then as the first officer of the USS Reliant, where he crossed paths with a man who never forgets a face.
