Once upon a time, before serving as the chief petty officer on Deep Space Nine (and at a time when his rank was apparently a great deal more flexible), Miles O'Brien manned the helm of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D. Notably he was at the helm when the ship encountered a malicious being known only as Q on their way to the mission at Farpoint Station and a few other occasions after that.

All in all, Miles O'Brien is a Starfleet crewman whose decades of experience in almost every single available field make him more valuable to a wise captain than any cadre of officers. From rewiring all of the Cardassian systems in Deep Space Nine, from manning almost every position on the USS Defiant, Miles had a wide range of skills that make him one of the most versatile characters in any Starfleet crew.

Miles grew up building model sailing ships, a hobby that he once shared with Captain Picard, who would hold Miles in the highest regard in his transporter rooms. A devoted husband and father, there's almost nobody more reliable than Miles O'Brien.
