Star Trek: Every Hero Ship Ranked Worst To Best
8. Voyager
The Intrepid-class USS Voyager was one of the most advanced ships in Starfleet when it first entered service. Some of it's new tech included the ability to land on a planet, the Emergency Medical Hologram program, bio-neural circuitry (a more efficient information-processing method that improved the ship's computer speed), and variable geometry warp nacelles (the technical term for the ship's movable nacelles that lifted when warp was engaged).
These were some pretty unique ideas, and the EMH aboard the ship definitely played a huge role throughout the series, but the ship barely ever landed, the bio-neural circuitry was usually only brought up when it malfunctioned or got some alien disease, and it was never really explained on camera why the folding nacelles helped (though an unpublished Star Trek: Voyager Technical Manual suggested that they somehow helped reduce the damage to subspace caused by warp travel).
Voyager was undeniably one of the most advanced ships of it's time, but it never really seemed like it. It was mostly the ship's crew and the many upgrades they found in the Delta Quadrant that allowed the ship to face off against foes like the Borg and Hirogen.
