This poor guy. He's just an engineer. He’s not a security officer, he isn't on an away mission, he doesn’t even have a phaser on him. He’s just a skilled worker trying to do his job. Accidents probably happen in engineering all the time, but this was a calculated execution.
The Enterprise gets upgraded with the brand new Skynet, sorry, I mean M-5 computer, which can think and reason like a human. So when it takes control of the ship for a battle simulation, it thinks and reasons that it should maybe be in charge full time.
So when Crewman Harper is instructed to yank the plug, M-5 vaporizes him. That’d be like your evil toilet murdering the plumber for trying to unclog it.
