Star Trek: Everything We Know About Section 31 (The Movie)

9. And Yeoh Shall Find

On 18 April 2023, just over a month after the Academy Awards, Star Trek: Section 31 was officially (re-)announced — no longer a series but "a special movie event". No one had had to grab Michelle Yeoh by transporter beam either, golden statuette still in hand.

According to Alex Kurtzman in an interview with Variety, the Everything Everywhere All At Once star in fact "doubled down on [Section 31]" post-Oscar win. Section 31 had finally found its place in the franchise, and Yeoh was "beyond thrilled to return to [her] Star Trek family".

Though now a movie, it might be a little precipitous to call Section 31 'Star Trek XIV'. In reality, number thirteen has yet to find a follow-up, but that’s another story. Perhaps a small nod, one unnamed species from Star Trek: Beyond did make an appearance in the Section 31 teaser trailer.

Originally scheduled for late 2023, but pushed back by the SAG-AFTRA strikes, filming for Section 31 began on 30 January 2024 and wrapped on 21 March. Given it will be available direct to streaming on Paramount+, CinemaBlend’s Mick Joest asked Olatunde Osunsanmi if the movie might benefit from even a limited theatrical release. His answer seemed like a 'no,' but maybe Emperor Georgiou will decree otherwise!
