Star Trek: Lower Decks Review - 6 Ups And 0 Downs
6. This Is Star Trek
If there's been a more tedious gripe inflicted on Star Trek as a community over the last few years it's "Star Trek isn't Star Trek anymore". Despite the entire world's television tastes, viewing habits, and methods of consumption changing radically since Enterprise went off the air, attempts to modernise both the production and the feel of the franchise really, really upset a lot of people.
Picard wasn't Star Trek because there wasn't enough Starfleet in it, and Discovery wasn't Star Trek because, yeah, ok, Starfleet are there but it's written by people who "obviously hate Star Trek, sheeple!!" or something. If that was you then A) my god, how can you be bothered? but also B) there, are you happy now!
There could not have made a series of establishing shots more Star Trek if they'd had a million attempts at it. The planet, the Starbase, the assorted Starships zipping around, the title sequence, the music, all of it, absolutely everything that's been allegedly missing from recent series presented front and centre from the opening moments.
I'm not somebody who gets upset by change but, still, this was so warmly and reassuringly nostalgic.
