Star Trek: Picard has put a lot of effort into making this feel like no other Star Trek show you've seen before. Everyone's swearing, everyone's shagging, and former Starfleet officers even get pop-up adverts for drug dens. But our opening scene this week took things to another level entirely.

Not since the opening scenes of Star Trek: First Contact has the franchise veered so stylistically into body horror, but seeing poor Icheb have his eye viscerally ripped from its socket will have shocked virtually everyone watching. This was something straight out of a slasher flick, and carried more weight in its execution than any f-bombing Admiral.
