Star Trek: Picard: Analyzing All The Ships From Season One

14. The Artifact

Also appearing in the closing moments of "Remembrance" and every subsequent episode except "Stardust City Rag", the derelict Borg cube AKA the Artifact is the second most important starship in Star Trek: Picard's first year.

Clearly distressed by the submatrix collapse that left it separated from the Borg Collective, the Artifact is distinguished by a patchwork of green-glowing forcefields. There are also huge, open canyons on its surface indicating it's a slightly tweaked design from the classic Borg cube dating back to Star Trek: The Next Generation's' second season and the updated Borg cube that appeared in Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Voyager.

The cube even appears to have a Borg sphere docked on one side ("Broken Pieces", "Et In Arcadia Ego, Part I"), similar to the one that was used as an escape vessel for the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact.

According to Hugh in "The Impossible Box", the Artifact reflects updated Borg tech, including a spatial trajector assimilated from the Sikarians from the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Prime Factors". The cube was also clearly modified by the Romulans to contain living quarters for its non-Borg drone inhabitants, landing pads for the smaller Romulan warbirds and Snakehead scout ships, even a dramatically lit bar that served Romulan ale.

Ultimately the Artifact crashed after a run-in with the synth's giant space orchids, but not before that badass moment when it unexpectedly barreled through the transwarp corridor above Coppelius in the opening moments of "Et In Arcadia Ego, Part I".
