Star Trek Picard: Every Easter Egg & Hidden Reference From 'Nepenthe'

9. Thad Story

Star Trek Sex Pistols
CBS

Deanna tells Soji about her and Will's late son, Thad, who was born on a starship which is likely the USS Titan mentioned in Star Trek Nemesis. Thad died from mendaxic neuroscleros, a very rare silicon-based virus that was theoretically curable before the synth ban. According to Deanna, MN could be treated by culturing the infected cells in an active positronic matrix (like Data's, see "Datalore"), but these devices were outlawed after the synth attack on Mars.

A silicon-based virus previously appeared in the Star Trek: Enterprise episode "Observer Effect", in which it was a totally new type of disease.

Riker and Troi brought Thad to Nepenthe for the regenerative properties in the soil which recalls the regenerative rings around the planet Ba'ku in the film Star Trek: Insurrection. Maybe they should've gone there?
