The day has finally come - Star Trek: Picard has aired its first episode, and the general consensus seems to be that it's a pretty solid start to CBS' much-anticipated follow-up to the 2002 Next Generation film Star Trek: Nemesis.
Though it remains to be seen how the various established threads will play out through the rest of the season, the show is nothing if not held firmly aloft by Patrick Stewart's fantastic work as an older Jean-Luc Picard.
This is certainly a "for the fans" show if its season premiere is any indication, evidenced no better than by the ludicrous number of Easter eggs and general avalanche of fan service on offer.
There are so many callbacks and visual gags packed into its mere 45-minute runtime, such that fans both hardcore and casual are sure to find plenty to enjoy.
If the remainder of season one can strike such a delicate balance between fan service and new ideas, then this could be a very special return for Jean-Luc and company...
