The scene then shifts to reality, where Picard is living out his days at Château Picard, his family's estate and vineyard in the small French village of La Barre. It's also the brand name of the wine his family produces.

The Next Generation of course explored Jean-Luc's lineage, namely his being descended from a French wine dynasty, while its series finale memorably offered up a flash-forward showing Picard living out a retired life on the estate.

Though this new series could've easily taken Jean-Luc in a new direction entirely, it's nevertheless a fitting piece of narrative and visual continuity that he did indeed end up retiring to his lavish abode after hanging things up.
