Star Trek Picard: Every Easter Egg & Hidden Reference From 'Remembrance'
18. J.J. Abrams
Even though Picard was largely conceived as a sequel-of-sorts to both Nemesis and The Next Generation, the newer Star Trek movies and TV shows have had an unmistakable influence on its style, as best evidenced by the involvement of Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote the two J.J. Abrams Trek movies.
Though there mercifully aren't many lens flares in sight, there is one brief moment which pays clear visual homage to Abrams' flashy style: when Picard's opening nightmare reaches its horrifying apex, an extreme dutch angle - that is, a tilted camera - is employed to depict Picard's discontent.
Abrams frequently employed the dutch angle on his Trek films much to fans' chagrin, and this flourish was replicated by Justin Lin on Star Trek Beyond, as well as used extensively (and divisively) in Star Trek: Discovery.
Thankfully dutching is otherwise completely absent throughout the episode, and its single use here was a restrained and appropriate nod to Abrams.
