Star Trek Picard: Every Major Character Ranked

11. Jurati

Star Trek Picard
CBS

Agnes Jurati, as written, doesn't work. Alison Pill is a terrific actress but the arc is all over the place. At first, she is introduced as a brilliant scientific mind (never really expanded on as the season goes on) and then as the hero who feels the need to accompany the new crew. This is a deception that is revealed as she murders Maddox and then allows the ship to be tracked, until she doesn't. Then she turns good and everything is fine.

There was a possibility for greatness in this character. If Maddox had to die, then Jurati could have been the symbol of learning to live with a devastating mistake. Instead, she is light comic relief and moments of dark introspection. There is no development. Her sins are forgiven instantly.

She is shown a vision of a potential future and murders a man in cold blood, then changes her mind through a conversation. Why? Why couldn't there have been more here? If the end point was to have her become a staunch supporter of synthetics, couldn't she have resisted slightly longer. After all, the synth colony does try to wipe out all organic life. The Romulans were right!

Jurati was rushed to the point of sacrificing character development. Pill acts, rather than a tortured scientist attempting to make amends, as a petulant sufferer who has moments of breaking the fourth wall to become the stand in for the audience in some of her questions. This could have been the arc of the season and instead it became a damp squib.
