This one has an interesting premise. While hosting two warring species, the Enterprise is overtaken by a being that possesses the Captain. Trying to handle both situations at once, the crew are again put in peril.

Marc Alaimo makes his first Star Trek appearance as one of the Antican diplomats, though went uncredited as he was unsure how the episode would turn out. He remembers it as being a lot of fun to do. The make-up for both races broke a rule that Roddenberry had put in place, as they both required full headpieces - although the results depict two of the more memorable aliens of the week.

While it wasn't the best episode in the first season, it had a very interesting plot behind it and featured several strong performances. It also was the first episode in the series to feature the death of a crewman, something that would of course occur again and again. It also served as the first episode to be directed by Cliff Bole, who would later go on to direct The Best of Both Worlds.

The episode also features a continuity error that would become more apparent after the episode The Battle. The USS Stargazer had originally been written as a Constitution class ship, matching the movie era Enterprise and Enterprise A. As such, there is a silver model of one of these ships on display in Picard's ready room, though once the decision was made to make the Stargazer a Constellation class vessel instead, this idea was scrapped and the model vanishes for good.
