Star Trek The Next Generation: Where Are They Now?
3. Diana Muldaur
A divisive figure amongst the fandom, Diana Muldaur’s
Dr. Katherine Pulaski was brought onto the show at the beginning of season two
as a replacement for the departing Dr. Wesley Crusher, only to be replaced
herself when Dr. Crusher’s actor returned the next season. Few fans felt much
was missed in this switch-up, since Dr. Pulaski struggled to gel with the cast
despite saving the lives of both Riker and Picard during her short tenure. Maybe
it was the fact that much of her character was reminiscent of the original
series’ McCoy, or her relationship with Riker’s father. In any case, Pulaski at
least had great chemistry with Data, who she managed to humanise during her
season spent aboard the Enterprise.
So whatever became of Muldaur?
Well, not a whole lot since the end of The Next Generation—though this is more due to the fact that the actor was nearing retiring age when she took the role, and had a long storied career prior to the series. Muldaur is all-but-retired now, after years spent as both an accomplished actor and president of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
