Star Trek: The Original Series - Ranking Every Major Character Worst To Best
9. Janice Rand
Played by Grace Lee Whitney, Janice Rand was Kirk's yeoman in the first season of The Original Series.
It's probably not much of a surprise to fans she's at the bottom of this list - Rand was only in a handful of episodes and was mainly a love interest for Kirk.
The character is a bit of a victim of her time - despite Gene Roddenberry envisioning her as a clearly intelligent woman, Rand quickly devolved into a damsel in distress for Kirk on multiple occasions. She was also pursued by other crew members on the show (including Sulu and an evil version of Kirk), and at one point was kidnapped by a young girl who was jealous of her relationship with the good captain.
She was eventually written out of the show, with conflicting reasons to do with cost issues, but it was also reported the producers wanted to free up Kirk to pursue other women. The character was featured in cameo roles in the subsequent films, where she had advanced to communications officer, but sadly she wasn't developed much further.
