Coming into the show's second season as a character meant to appeal to a younger audience, Pavel Chekov is the young and naive ensign who serves as the Enterprise's navigator. Played by Walter Koenig, Chekov is a bit of a prodigy with extraordinary intelligence, and his knowledge is used to assist both Kirk and Spock on multiple occasions.

Really, he only ranks as the lowest of the main crew as he doesn't appear in all three seasons, and arguably doesn't get as much screen time to develop. He's a comedy character really - a sidekick in the show who generally takes on a bit more of an upbeat stance when the crew are facing life-endangering situations. Plus, his Russian accent remains hilarious to this day.

Still, that hasn't stopped the character from becoming one of the most beloved in the franchise. The ensign's legacy has payed off with more expanded roles in the films, and of course with an alternate version in the Kelvin timeline, being played superbly by the late Anton Yelchin.
