Star Trek: Top 10 Underrated Next Generation Episodes

9. Gambit

gambit stewart Oh, the grief I got for putting this on the last list... and, with the benefit of hindsight, rightfully so. In this seventh-season two parter, Captain Picard is declared dead in a bar fight when a midget mouse creature of some kind tells the crew that he was vaporized, and acting Captain Riker leads an investigation that leads to his subsequent kidnapping by a group of scavengers, including none other than the bald man himself who had apparently been beamed away with a special transporter by the baddies and forced to help them dig up an ancient Vulcan artifact. All around, it's an exciting story and it's fun to watch. So what went wrong? Well, for one thing, the writers felt the need to take a left turn in the middle of a battle scene and add a morality tale at the end regarding war and peace, one so in your face Picard may as well have put a bandana on his head and started blazing up. There was also the acting. "The acting in 'Gambit' makes it ineligible ," Matt Mira of the Nerdist said on Twitter. He's right; the acting in "Gambit" is absolutely dreadful. It's not entirely the cast's fault though, as they were given some pretty terrible lines that almost seemed forced. Among the top contenders for worst lines in script writing history... Riker: "I have an open wound... right here... it hurts like hell." Troi: "Do you think you have the monopoly on feelings???" Picard: "I think it's time we had a new commander!"
