Star Trek Voyager Feature Length Episodes: Ranked
9. Basics
At the end of Voyager's second season, there were several plot threads that were still dangling that needed to be wrapped up going into the third year. The entire plot line involving Seska needed to be addressed and the Kazon had more than worn out their welcome. It was becoming harder and harder to justify running into a race who were supposed to be pirates.
It was decided to build up to this. The informant character of Jonas was introduced and then killed off but the seeds were sown for the Kazon to get close. Brad Douriff's Lon Suder returned with a restrained mania that is powerful to watch. Seska's baby, supposedly fathered by Chakotay is still out there.
When the Kazon finally take the ship and strand the crew on the planet, the pace kicks up. It becomes a rush through to the finish, wherein the Kazon are defeated and the recurring villain of Seska is killed - a decision that actress Martha Hackett did not agree with and was a last minute addition to the script. However, this two parter showed that Voyager was capable of strong stories and action relatively early into its run and Seska would get another couple of chances to bother the crew again.
A solid two-parter and a very good start to the third season.
