Star Wars: Rebels - 12 Easter Eggs, In-Jokes And References You Need To See
2. Ralph McQuarrie Designs
Ralph McQuarrie is one of the most important names in the history of Star Wars, a figure whose influence has spread over the entire saga.
He was the concept designer and visionary charged with bringing George Lucas’ creation to life in the first instance, his designs going on to become many of the iconic scenes we know from the original trilogy.
Similarly, Star Wars Rebels is hugely influenced by McQuarrie’s work, with a lot of the animation quite clearly being in the same sort of style, and even some of his unused ideas being featured into the show.
These include the character Zeb, who is of the Lasat species, which is based on early designs for Wookiees; Azmorigan, seen in the episode Idiot’s Array, was based on some early Jabba the Hut work; the planet of Lothal; and the droid Chopper, based on R2D2 concepts.
In fact there is also a protocol droid that appears based on drawings of C-3PO, and they all appear together, meaning that there are two Threepios and two Artoos together.
