Star Wars Rebels Season 3: 20 Easter Eggs & References You Need To See
1. Old Wounds
Before confronting Maul in Twin Suns, while sending Ezra on his way, Obi-Wan says “I will deal with this old wound.”
This is a nice little Easter egg referring to the Star Wars Dark Horse comic, Old Wounds – which just so happened to depict another version of Maul hunting Obi-Wan down to Tatooine.
This wasn’t the first time the developers have referenced the popular comic. When Maul was first resurrected for The Clone Wars, his mechanical “chicken” legs and overlong head spikes were also used to visualise the return of this fan-favourite Sith Lord.
In the original comic, Maul does find Obi-Wan on Tatooine at the Homestead where Luke Skywalker is being raised and do engage in a final battle. But Maul’s death is far less dramatic, as it is Owen Lars who shoots Maul while he is distracted by his old nemesis. The attack on the Homestead would then lead to Owen telling Obi-Wan never to come near them again through fear of endangering Luke, relating his Owen’s dismissal of Luke finding out more about Ben Kenobi in A New Hope.
There is another interested parallel in the sense that Maul’s death is not dissimilar to that of Qui-Gon’s. Both die, cradled in Obi-Wan’s arms and their final words are for who they believe to be the “Chosen One”. The difference here is that Maul is still tied to his dark sider training and sees the Chosen One as his last chance for being avenged. By the end, Maul and Obi-Wan share a common enemy and objective – to see an end to the Sith.
