Star Wars Rebels Season 3: 6 Big Things We Still Haven't Seen

Season 3 of Star Wars Rebels is well underway, and the last few episodes have given plenty for fans to be excited about. We’ve had the introduction of Governor Pryce, the key authority figure of Lothal. Maul has made his return and forced Ezra to merge both a Jedi and Sith Holocron together, revealing the key to destroying the Sith once and for all. We’ve had Tom Baker as the Bendu make his grand entrance, and even discovered how Wedge Antilles made his way to the Rebellion.

Best of all, we’ve had the long awaited and highly anticipated introduction of Grand Admiral Thrawn, the beloved EU character finally making his way into canon. Thrawn has only been seen a couple of times and has yet to demonstrate his true power and intelligence that he was well known for, but we can be rest assured that when he strikes, the Rebels will be in great danger.

It's clear from all the opening instalments that Dave Filoni and his team are playing the long game, with plenty more promised from the trailers and interviews yet to make it to air. We're now five episodes into Season 3, but there is so much more heading our way.

We may have already seen Maul back this season in Holocrons of Fate, but rest assured that isn’t the last we’ve seen of him this year. After merging the Jedi and Sith Holocrons together, both Ezra and Maul saw visions of a planet with twin suns and after seeing someone from his past, Maul fled chanting an insane rendition of “He lives.” Filoni said himself that they didn’t want Maul to be a recurring character who is just there for the sake of it. Maul’s place within the Rebels-verse was solid with his return appearance in Twilight of the Apprentice, but lacked stability when he took the Ghost crew hostage. Now he has a purpose, and it looks like his journey will be taking him home – to Dathomir.

Above, you can see Maul continuing to tempt Ezra over to the dark side and make him his apprentice, but in the background there is a familiar aesthetic that many fans of The Clone Wars will recognise as the barren, crimson wasteland of Dathomir. Moments from the Season 3 trailer also picture images of green spirits that bear a resemblance to Nighsister magic, the other former occupants of the planet and appear to be instrumental in causing trouble for our Rebel friends.

It would make sense that Maul would lure Ezra to his homeworld in his conquest to turn the boy over to the dark side. The planet itself is rich in its power, fueling both Maul’s Zabrak race and the Nightsisters and their practices. Sadly we will not be seeing more of either species as they were wiped out by the Separatists during The Clone Wars, but that doesn’t mean there weren't dangers left behind.

In various trailers and TV spots, we also see Kanan in the same environment, but without his mask and sporting some mystical green eyes that appear to temporarily give him the ability to see. It’s a blink and you’ll miss it moment, but Kanan is openly duelling Maul. Whether this is of free will or a spirit possessing his body, is yet to be confirmed.
